Bright Yellows in a Drab Winter

One of our winter feeder treasures are Yellow Rumped (Myrtle) Warblers. I have no problems attracting them with suet and peanut products and can expect to enjoy their frequent daily visits for up to six months. My earliest photo for this season came on October 6th, and they left me last spring some time shortly after April 16th. While they are very common in Cary at this time of year, and while I’ve seen them in the field for years, the BirdCam has permitted me the opportunity to closely study their interesting winter coloration. The male is the perfect image of a bandit, with his black mask and brilliant side flash. The female has wonderfully subtle color variations. The moments I enjoy most are watching the YRWs hovering, briefly but energetically, as they pick at peanut butter. At those times, the yellow flashes on both sexes are especially vivid. Such bright colors during a fairly colorless time of year!
