First Hummingbird Sighting 2009

What an Easter treat! We have a Ruby Throated Hummingbird at last! While enjoying Easter dinner, I observed a male hummingbird at the "apple" feeder in the front garden. I saw two more visits through the day, but was unable to get a BirdCam photo (the picture shown is from 2008). The camera is set up at that feeder again today, so perhaps I'll have my first photo in 2009 before too long. I don't know yet if the bird is planning to stay for the summer or is moving through the area, but this about the time of year we typically establish our resident Ruby Throats. At the very least we know that our feeders are sufficiently enticing to attract hummingbirds again this year, and it is a delight to see them again after a long, dark winter. I hope to take many pictures!

Greetings from a hummingbird fanatic in Athens, Ohio! Great photo- I'm considering picking up one of those cameras also since by the time I get my camera ready to shoot, they've long since zoomed off! Our first Ruby Throated of 2009 visited our feeder just this morning and has been back six more times in the three hours since- looks like he may be considering taking up residence, if it's not one of last year's birds returning. I can't adequately express the joy these beautiful birds bring us each year! The 'feeder wars' dogfights can be very tense and exhilarating to watch- by late August of last year we counted eight hummers at once jockeying for position at one of our feeders- so many that I actually feared being struck by dueling birds!

Hello ihalliday! I had a wonderful time photographing hummers last summer with the BirdCam, and collected some very good video as well (I have a short film on Youtube) I think you'd get some memorable pictures. And I share your experience with dogfights. My front yard feeder was "owned" by a particularly aggressive female we fondly called the Buzz Bomber. She repelled other hummingbirds and took after me a couple of times! Thanks for visiting!
