Yes, I know that House Finches are not originally native to the east. And yes, I know that these small birds have an enormous appetite. But I can't bring myself to resent them. I have a fondness for House Finches. In large part I am attracted to any back yard underdog. How often do you hear someone boast that "I have House Finches at my feeders!" We don't give them nearly enough credit for being entertaining guests. My Finches hustle and bustle in a ballet of seed eating. They sometimes jostle and get in each other's way, but seem agreeable to the chaos. And when I point the BirdCam their way I often get a group, not just one bird who might be passing through. And they're always there: morning and afternoon, rain and shine, hot or cold. Plain? perhaps. Lovable? always.
