It has been interesting to compare and contrast activity at our two bird baths. Since installing the new ground level unit, the older pedestal model now only gets American Robins and Gray Catbirds as a rule. Down on the ground, I'm seeing a much wider spectrum of species including not only the aforementioned Robins and Catbirds, but also House Finches, Carolina Wrens, Carolina Chickadees, and especially Brown Thrashers. The BirdCam evidence from yesterday showed the Thrashers in half the pictures. Clearly the ground level unit is more comfortable for the birds, but I am not sure how much of the attraction is the altitude, amount of sunlight (it gets more), the presence of a "Water Wiggler", or "natural look and feel." Some things must remain mysteries.
