Last Days For Hummingbirds

I am reconciling myself to the notion that our summer Ruby Throated Hummingbird guests will not be here much longer. Last year's residents were definitely gone before the last week of the month, and my journal emphatically notes that BirdCam photos ended abruptly on September 22, 2008. I don't know if these birds have some idea that they will need to move on soon or whether they are more impulsive. Certainly they will be taking in as many calories as they can in preparation for the long migration ahead. I am watching for signs of increased feeder activity but I'm not seeing anything this week that seems out of the ordinary for these energetic characters. At this point the BirdCam is focused on the hummer dish and I will soon know I have taken my last photo for the season.
