It is now clear that the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds which stayed with me this summer have moved on. BirdCam came up with no photos at all over the weekend. Evidently my last hummer-ful day was 9/17, which aligns very well with last year. In past years I would have been thinking of putting the nectar feeders away for the winter, but this winter I plan to keep one up (the easiest to clean!) My friends at the Stevens Nature Center in Cary are urging Cary citizens to keep feeders up for
Rufous Hummingbirds. Sightings of vagrants in North Carolina are
apparently increasing and the birds have been recorded in Cary. I have little reason to think I will be visited, but there is no harm and little cost to joining the winter feeder battalion. So this dish feeder will stay up and we will see if anything happens.
