It appears that our resident American Goldfinches have pulled out their winter wardrobe. I'd noticed they were looking a bit scruffy earlier in the month and during today's feeder rounds came across a male who was unquestionably in winter plumage. I think the decreasing length of photo period must set off the biological changes: temperatures sure have not! We are so struck by the vividness of their summer yellows that the new fall look seems drab and depressing. But after all, they are the same cheery birds and I am certain their appetites will not be depressed as the winter food supplies tighten. And I must "enjoy" another omen of the coming cold times.
