I "maintain" a southwest corner of the yard that is on the scruffy side and thus is attractive to a variety of birds that do not cotton as much to the feeder scene close to the house. I have also provided a little bait in the form of seed cast on the ground. Over the past week I planted the older BirdCam 1.0 at ground level to see who paid a visit. Among the species I recorded in that time were White Throated Sparrows (see photo), Eastern Towhees, Slate Colored Juncos, Northern Cardinals, Chipping Sparrows, Mourning Doves, and Carolina Wrens. This little patch has been quite a hot spot over the year, providing feeding opportunities at various heights, water (a ground level bath), and plenty of tangly cover and perching points. As 2010 develops we should see more interesting things happen as some trumpet creeper I planted kicks in. And I will be sure to on the watch for other notions to make the property more attractive to wildlife.
