How's This Cover Shot?

As we watch the American Goldfinches molt into their breeding plumage, it is easy to focus on the dazzling male yellows and give short shrift to the female birds. I am as guilty as anyone in this regard. They are simply not graced with much in the way of color. There is something of a yellow bib, and the sharp black-white contrast of the tail and wing feathers, but otherwise the female finches are as drab and nondescript as can be. That may enhance nest safety, but it won't get them many cover shots. To remedy that, I have given this female her own chance at glory, in the form of this close up portrait at the nyger seed sock. And hopefully that will relieve me from any guilty feedings having treated the female goldfinches as foil material for their colorful partners.
