By and large, the Ruby Throated Hummingbird activity we experience here is a female game. As far as I have observed, the nectar feeders are "owned" by various females and are vigilantly policed. Trespassers are run off, regardless of family status. The "Oriole" feeder at our main feeder station has historically been the property of the alpha female. But now and then, I have seen a male bird score some nectar there. And yesterday BirdCam spotted the first male of this season. He must have been lucky at that moment given that this is the only such photo on the day. I wonder where he usually forages during the day. It is very possible that there are other nectar feeders around the neighborhood which the male might "own." We'll see if we can spot him again in coming days.Friday, July 16, 2010
