Goldfinches Are Nesting

Around here, at least, the American Goldfinches are pretty much the last species to start their nesting cycle. They key off the aster seed cycle, I believe, and in high summer such provender is easy to obtain. I'm fairly certain the local finches are well underway. For one, I'm not seeing the female bird who was around earlier this month. The male is an active feeder and he may be bringing her calories. Proof? Well, I have none. As I've mentioned before I'm not in a good position in a neighborhood like this to find nests unless they're on my property. And I really doubt the goldfinches are nesting here. But if they are nearby that is good enough. I enjoy seeing them in spite of their prodigious appetites, and perhaps youngsters may imprint on my feeder station. It's a thought.
