We don't see Hairy Woodpeckers very often. Most folks don't, certainly in backyard environments. Here, I've recorded them on BirdCam only on 6% the number of days Downy Woodpeckers were photographed. In the past year and a half I've hardly seen them at all. In fact, between early November 2008 and today I recorded them on only two dates -- each in a November. And now I have not seen them in eight months. I wonder if there is either a population decline or just bad luck going on (i.e. that they come by when neither I or BirdCam don't see them.) While Hairys are not renowned for visiting feeders, I have seen more of them in the past than now. We'll just have to wait and see what comes. Maybe I'll get lucky and one of these elusive birds comes by soon.

David - your pictures are fabulous!!! How's the taser working??
Thanks for the kudos!
Sadly, the sonic blaster (it emits an ultrahigh frequency sound only animals can hear--not a taser) didn't annoy the squirrels at all.
Darn it.
