Bumper Crop

One possible reason I don't see hummers at some of the feeders at my level as often could be that there are choice alternatives much higher up. This year has seen an unprecedented show of flowers by the Trumpet Vine. I don't ever remember flowers being available so long in the season. I saw the first flowers back in April and they simply haven't quit. Ruby Throateds love these flowers as a nectar source (among so many others.) My vines are especially lush and run far up the Loblollies, so it's hummer heaven far above my head. It might just be possible that I'll see this vine's bright offerings entirely bracket the 2010 hummingbird season -- if they can hold on only another four weeks! Well, it's unlikely, but stranger things have happened. For now, I am every day enjoying my "bumper crop."
