I am back from a marvelous four-day conference on church music on North Carolina's Emerald Isle (a barrier island.) It was not only a fine time, musically (and socially) but also for seeing the birds. In between sessions I was out seeking, viewing, and photographing birds. Over the next few days I'll share some of these "backyard" birds, all mere minutes from my cottage. An especially nice discovery was of a marsh walk established on the remarkably pristine property. (Mapaholics: look at 34.6930 N and 76.8652 west) I got quite close to Great Blue Herons (shown), Great and Snowy Egrets and White Ibis. One attraction here was a "heron tree" where I counted four birds one morning. Happily, the wading birds didn't mind getting fairly close to the boadwalk and tolerated my presence. The salt marsh site is fairly quiet, healthy and abundant with food and cover, making it a local hotspot. I was back often!
More tomorrow...
