In contrast to previous years, the summer of '10 has been a very good one for us in terms of visits by American Goldfinches. We kept one family group and these birds hang out at the feeders every day, always in the company of House Finches, and possessed of the same gluttonous habits. The finches all park themselves at tube feeders and gorge away for many minutes at a time. But I don't mind. It is such a nice thing to see those yellows, especially the blazing yellow of the males. A little extra sunflower seed is worth the cost. This far in season, I'm pretty certain we'll keep them into the cold months. And then the uncertainty begins. Will this family group persist as regulars. We shall see...
