Cajun Birds

My suet eaters are Cajuns. No, I'm not kidding. Look at the photo. About ten days ago I put out two suet cakes on the same day. One (on the left), a "high energy" formula and the other a "hot pepper" product. I've been using hot pepper for a few years as a squirrel disincentive. But this product is sometimes hard to find and I'm forced to use other types. Trouble is, my birds definitely prefer hot pepper. Those cakes went out the same day. "High Energy" is barely touched, the hot pepper is all gone. And yes, I tested. I faced the hot pepper towards the house, assuming that birds prefer the farther position, closer to the treeline. I've actually run this experiment several times and hot pepper always, always gets taken first. And let it be said that I can't identify a species that doesn't like the hot pepper formula: Downy Woodpeckers, American Robins, Eastern Bluebirds, Carolina Chickadees... you name it, they are all Cajuns. I suppose if I entirely banned hot pepper from the premises the suet eaters would in time give in and take what's there. But why? They like the hot stuff, even when given alternatives. And the squirrels would wreak havoc. Laissez les bon temps rouler!
