Is the ultimate sign that winter is ended found in the sighting of hummingbirds? Some of us think it's a pretty good marker. And first sightings have been reported in the lower 48. I follow
a nifty website dedicated to hummingbirds that's showing first encounters in six Gulf Coast states through March 14th. That's about average for reports going back the last decade. We can expect someone to report a hummingbird in these parts (Piedmont North Carolina) in roughly five to seven days (I am not one of those eagle-eyes.) My own encounters will be much delayed. I don't ever see a Ruby Throated Hummingbird much before mid April and the summer residents don't seem to "take" until mid May, which is right around the time our Trumpet Creeper breaks into flower. But it is exciting to see this jeweled wave taking place every spring. Onwards!
