Grand Theft Nest

The bluebird box mystery continues to baffle me. Each photo from inside shows me something new and yet something that doesn't make any sense. The latest (shown) shows me that the style fits Carolina Wrens, but this deep into the season we definitely don't have an active wren nest. And the bluebirds are not showing enough signs of moving in. And no other species has been observed making an entry. So as crazy as it sounds, I'm working on the model that we are observing nest de-construction: opportunistic birds have removed nest material. I had high hopes for the box which used all the right parts, yet all we see is shenanigans. Obviously we keep watching, but it's hard to believe much is going to happen going forward.
