Late Season Eating Binge

It has been a remarkably interesting year with respect to the subject of backyard birds at feeders in high summer. And chief among my interests is the astonishing consumption rate of every foodstuff I've put out. It's in marked contrast to the last three summers when the numbers were dropping sharply through July and August. Not so this time. I'm hard pressed to explain it. Are natural food sources scarce? maybe seeds (drought impact...) but surely not insects, and suet for one goes like hotcakes. Late broods? yes in some cases, but less so in others, and even some species' juveniles appear to have dispersed. Perhaps it is some combination of those, and other factors I don't see. We'll keep watching...does the trend continue?
