Blackbird Ponderings
Not far from here--perhaps just a few hundred feet--lies a modest pond ringed by various aquatic vegetation. It's prime Red Winged Blackbird territory, and from time to time we are visited by members of that tribe. This week we hosted this male. What is interesting is that I had for several years seen them only in fairly crummy weather. But starting in spring '11 I have seen them come by on days that were not very bad at all. Speculation: the tribal memory now knows easy feeding is available just up the street, and RBWs working the local area might swing by if they need a quick bite. I have not yet found information on what size territory a clan might work, but I could easily imagine these suburban blackbirds needing a few hundred acres. This one's in good color and I certainly would welcome him (and at least a few others) if they chose to pay more visits.
