Winter Lineup: White Throated Sparrow

The White Throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) is a winter-only species in these parts---well, make that winter plus early spring, as they linger well into migration season.  In summer our birds live in Canada.  They're very difficult to attract to feeders except for the turf below, where discarded seeds fall.  And in that opportunity zone they're very easy to find on a regular basis.  It also helps that we have a decent woody buffer which is the primary attractant, I suppose.  What makes them especially pleasant for us is their beautiful song, which I remember as "Oh Sweet Canada Canada Canada".  I hear this a great deal in February, March and April, and sometimes in the winter months.  In fact, this bird is arguably the best songster of the cold months in my back yard.  Attractive, melodious, and good mannered.  What could be better?
