Bird Baths Really Matter
Our cold snap (for us, a 22F low was "severe" this morning!) brought to mind the critical importance of water to songbirds. So many sources freeze up that the occasional bath with a de-icer, say, like mine, becomes a popular spot. And today, that was definitely the case. All kinds of birds were visiting the pedestal and ground baths, and some, like a loopy set of Mourning Doves, hung out there past sunset. Without snow on the ground, food can readily be had. But liquid water was at a definite premium. And so I always recommend those seeking to attract birds have that water source on hand. A deicer is cheap, but even adding fresh water at sunrise will do the job in the cold times. You'll make some friends!
