Nest Box Update
By my best sense of things, we are well inside the first brood period of the 2012 nesting season. And my nest boxes are, as usual, mostly empty. One that has had activity in the past did score tenants (White Breasted Nuthatches) who were seen again, there, today. My "Bird Bottle" which did so well late in the season last year isn't occupied, but perhaps its value goes up in hot weather. The other "big boxes" (The WBN box just mentioned is in this class) are also empty. But last year all they attracted were scoundrely House Wrens. The Bluebird box (shown) has also been empty despite having housed two successful broods in 2011. And the remaining four? Duds all. And those four have been busts as long as I've had 'em. Well, except that I just moved one and am hoping it has better curb appeal. We shall see. So the first round isn't so "happening." Let's hope for young nuthatches and more success as the season mounts. I will report any developments...
