An Extended Winter Visit

As is typical with White Throated Sparrows, the long winter visit to the Piedmont is extremely long.  All of our other cold season guests are gone by mid-April.  The sparrows remain, and to add luster to that extended stay, are singing.  The "Oh See Canada Canada Canada" song rises above all other birdsong these days.  Yet the breeding activity will take place elsewhere.  My authorities suggest that eastern Canada is the destination for our birds.  Certainly nothing south of Pennsylvania.  Presumably they are just practicing their art.  I can say my spring chores are more pleasant when set to that tune!  And I can sip a beverage in comfort whilst watching them scratch through the underbrush: a view that's not as much fun in most of the sparrows' regular season!
