And Still Barn Swallows
This morning I had the opportunity to check a site where we've observed Barn Swallow nests all summer. Those nests are all there, and they're still going strong. The site is an excellent one: the underside of a bridge that crosses a footpath (not another road) and a stream, and has a fine mudfield besides. The stream is part of a protected riparian corridor and offers very good food opportunities for swallows. That they've used this site consistently for years demonstrates its virtues. But all too soon they will be gone for the season. The young will gain competence, and the call of the south will become irresistable. I'll try to check another time or two...perhaps I'll stay lucky.
