Late Season Hummers
It turns out hummingbird season has not reached its end after all! Over the weekend I spotted a female Ruby Throated Hummingbird at the two remaining nectar feeders. She was definitely starved, and drank greedily and at length each time I saw her. Presumably she is a migrant from northern reaches of the summer range. Our summer residents are usually gone by the autumnal equinox. But I cannot recall seeing hummers as late as the last day of September. It certainly was a wonderful surprise to see these little jewels in autumn days! It may be a long time before I get to see one again.
