Birds of December: Downy Woodpecker

Downy Woodpeckers.  Somehow they manage to attract my attention a great deal more in the winter than in the warm months.  They don't really attract much attention: they fly in, do their work on the suet, and fly out.  Perhaps in summer they are eclipsed by larger and more glamorous species.  In the winter they are definitely more noticeable and comforting reminders of life in cold times.  These little guys are always there, every week, every day.  And every December, too.  God Bless 'em, Downeys are wonderful characters.  I really should appreciate them much more...
