Identification Challenges

Every so often BirdCam photography comes up with something both mysterious and tantalizing. I often get shots of birds that I can't quite identify, but which don't concern me as I can pretty well point at one of several common possibilities. Then there is something like the picture above. It showed up uniquely in a group of 107 pictures taken at a suet basket. I've stared at a blow-up of the image and scrutinized my field guides, and remain baffled. It looks most like an American Goldfinch, But what was it doing at a suet basket? That's the fun of BirdCamming. You can get wonderful surprises that challenge your skills, but those surprise images can be studied intensely for hours, shared with peers for comments, and just plain enjoyed.
