One-Season Chipping Sparrows

Chipping Sparrows are a BirdCam curiosity for me. While these birds are visible year-round in the Piedmont, although somewhat less commonly in the winter than in summer, I don’t have very many pictures in my collection taken on the Bird Cam. And in fact I have only photographed them in spring months (my earliest photo being a March 9th and latest a June 25th.) As would be expected they’re most typically foraging on the ground and many of my photos of them were taken in such locations. However, they do visit feeders on occasion and some of my more interesting photos of Chippies occurred on a dish hummingbird feeder in early May last year. I also recorded photos at our tube feeders both last June and this past April. They’re delightful to watch and have beautiful plumage, so I am more than a little embarrassed how little photographs I have of them. I am thinking of doing more ground level work this summer to see if I can’t break the spring-time jinx.
