A Predator's Repast

On a late afternoon survey of my feeders last month I came across a reminder of the dark side of feeding backyard birds. At wood's edge, just ten or so feet from the feeders, I observed a Cooper's Hawk calmly finishing up a meal that was, as best I can tell, one of our resident Tufted Titmice. I've known for some time that a hawk was in the neighborhood, but hadn't previously had a close encounter with either this or any other hawk on the property. It's not easy watching the birds I attract become a predator's dinner, but I am also appreciative of the fact that the predators have to make a living, too. I believe that I while I have set up a tempting target for a hawk, the feeders are at least in a location that gives a little more edge to the little guys.
