Snow is Not a Background

From the Dumb Mistakes File: Not being a world class photographer, I've learned the hard way about background and foreground contrasts with my BirdCam. The latest lesson came in the form of a significant snowfall here in Central North Carolina on January 20th. Several inches of snow fell that day and stuck around for two days. I was disappointed with my photography: the bright background overpowered the more interesting foreground subjects, and 388 pictures were rendered nearly useless. I'm now a great deal more sensitive to background! And perhaps some test photography would be in order?
