Bluebirds of Happiness

I don’t think I’ve met a birdwatcher who doesn’t express delight at seeing Eastern Bluebirds, especially at their home and feeders. For myself, I am delighted constantly. We have been very successful at attracting these beautiful birds to the feeder station at CaryBirdCam in all seasons of the year, and last year they at least started a nest in one of my backwoods nest boxes (something went wrong after about two weeks.) They respond well to suet, peanut butter, and peanut pieces, and have used the bird bath with regularity. I’m a little surprised that we do so well as the open spaces in this neighborhood are hardly dramatic, but for whatever reason they appeal to our family group (my shorthand for the at least two pairs of bluebirds I see). We’re hoping for nesting activity in 2009 and the Bluebirds have available five boxes in their size range. I remounted two over the winter to face the most open space I can offer (my southeast corner) in hopes of greater curb appeal. We shall see what comes. And I shall continue to offer the mix of habitat, food, and other amenities that I hope keep a family on the grounds for many years to come.
