Music To My Ears

As spring unfolds here in the Piedmont, I am enjoying the songs of my neighborhood Passerines. I now hear territorial songs from a wide variety of species. The American Robins are definitely singing before sunrise. I also hear the Carolina Wrens and Northern Cardinals at early hours. And I have a regular Eastern Towhee making his statement in the late afternoon. I’ve also heard American Goldfinches and Pine Warblers, and the occasional Northern Flicker, Downy Woodpecker, Red Bellied Woodpecker, Fish Crow, and Blue Jay. Regrettably my listening time is greatly restricted by professional and avocational demands, so I am sure I am missing other species which have set up territories or are at least thinking about it. One I am eagerly awaiting is the Wood Thrush which I've heard in our buffer zones for many years. It’s a wonderful mix of sound at this time of year!
