New Experiments in Photography Against Snow

Mere days after I reached the conclusion that there were very long odds against more snow this season, we received another blanketing yesterday (3.5".) So much for my weather sense! However, this meteorological nuisance gave me both a second chance to watch a veritable mob of birds in the morning (at one point, I counted 32 at my feeder station) and a chance to see if I learned anything about BirdCam photography in the snow. This time I made certain to have a background field that wasn’t all white. In this case, my backdrop is the curtain of trees behind the house. In doing this I improved the contrast noticeably, but most of the pictures were still unfavorable in the bird-to-snow ratio. Birds have a small surface area and just can’t compete well against such a light background. I learned a great deal today. I wonder when I’ll apply those lessons again!
