Readers may recall that I am currently engaged in a little "food fight" with a pesky lot of squirrels. I had dislodged them from the tube feeders by substituting safflower for sunflower, and the suet baskets by employing "hot pepper" suet dough. I have now rolled them back from my peanut piece feeder, too. The magic was a few tablespoons of the "Squirrel Away" repellant powder I buy from Ace Town and Country. This powder was shaken in a gallon bag with 20 ounces of peanut pieces. BirdCam provided photographic evidence that the squirrels wouldn't touch the amended peanut product, leaving plenty for the bluebirds, nuthatches, siskins, and others. Unfortunately, I have not yet found a way to make "Squirrel Away" work with peanut butter, but I am constantly thinking about the problem. At least so far I have reduced the number of visiting squirrels. And that is quite satisfying!
