Dripper Back in Operation

This past Saturday I reactivated the dripper at the birdbath. We’re safely past the last likely freeze date---I think!, and in any case I am eager to see a little more traffic here. I use purpose-built equipment which consists of a thin PVC tube attached at one end to the dripper and on the other a water meter at the back side tap. The meter is programmed to open the valve from noon to 6 PM every day of the week. I can regulate the water flow in three places and am careful to allow only one drop per second, more or less. Relatively little water is consumed: I measured consumption at 1.5 gallons per day last summer. The dripper definitely attracts many songbirds. Among those I photographed last summer were American Robins, Eastern Bluebirds, Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, Northern Cardinals, Mourning Doves, Gray Catbirds, and House Finches. Once the weather really heats up I have a mister accessory which visual evidence suggested was appealing to smaller birds. I will discuss this in a post later this summer. I’m very pleased with the dripper equipment and can definitely recommend its use as a powerful bird attractant.
