This past winter I put out a ball of cotton fibers (obtained from my local Wildbirds Unlimited for use in the 2009 nesting season. I noted in the fall cleaning that at least two nest boxes had some dryer lint mixed into the nesting material: there is a clear interest in such fibers in this area. In the past two weeks I've now seen signs that the cotton ball has been picked at, although I have no idea by whom. I put a Birdcam out for three days in hopes of detecting activity at the cotton balls but the results were discouraging: no birds those days. Hopefully the cotton will prove useful to some of my avian friends as the season wears on.
