I paid my second visit in 2009 to my favorite seed outlet this past week. I’ve patronized Family Home and Garden in Raleigh regularly, and especially since I conducted a price comparison exercise at five stores in my immediate area. I have a fondness for “old timey” feed stores, having accompanied my father to such dealers in my childhood, and FH&G comes close to this standard. Another 40 pounds of black oil sunflower seed and 25 pounds of safflower seed came home along with the last bag of peanut pieces they had to sell this season. As one can tell, I subscribe to the "economy buy" school. I love buying in bulk and I have rigorously checked for the best deals among the many nearby seed dealers. I appreciate that some of my peers are in the “buy the best you can afford” school, but I demur: my monoculture feeders (one feeder, one seed) get very good traffic, so don't see the need to dig deeper in the wallet yet. And in the end, how I would miss the "old timey" feed store!
