One Nest Box Claimed

At least one of my seven nest boxes has a claimant! Tuesday afternoon, while working at home, I observed interesting behavior by at least one Tufted Titmouse. There were frequent visits to the box throughout the observation period; perhaps every five to ten minutes. At my range I could not clearly determine if material was being delivered to the box, but at the very least the bird made efforts to chip away wood at the entrance and on the front of the box, which I expect is the product of an excavation instinct. I’m satisfied that the resident Titmice are pursuing a first round nest there. I did not observe any comparable activity at any of the other six boxes, one of which had a going Eastern Bluebird nest in 2008 and another a probable Chickadee nest the same summer. Good news so far! We shall see if any other nesting activity takes place this month.
