Red Bellied Woodpeckers, uniquely among my regulars, are a delight and a nuisance both. At our suet baskets they are marvelous to behold: beautifully colored, entertainingly quirky, and good subjects for the Birdcam. And they are dependable visitors all year round. Yet, as a homeowner, I also find the RBW to be a massive irritant in the breeding season. They have found many resonant surfaces on our house: gutters, flashing, and chimney cap most often, which enable their territorial signalling. And those calls...! The woodpeckers can wake the dead with their infernal pounding. One must take the good with the bad. Our neighborhoods would definitely be the poorer without the RBWs.
