Watching Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are entertaining to watch, and we have definitely been entertained by the doings at the feeder tree, but they are maddening to understand. Guided by my pacific instincts (i.e.--seeking to reduce hummingbird conflicts) I've over time installed four separate nectar feeders none of which can be seen from another. As one would expect, I have seen fights at one feeder and others appear neglected. I have seen no evidence that two of the four are used at all, one of which was frequently used last summer. I cannot comprehend why certain feeders are used or not, having ruled out questions of sun, color, exposure and other variables. Maybe they just like to fight? The effort to understand the hummingbird is a lifelong learning process.
