Choices in Transferring Images

Wingscapes provided two ways to transfer images from the BirdCam to a computer. (a third possibility now exists with the Eye Fi card series which I hope to cover in an upcoming post.) One method is to connect the camera directly to the computer using the included USB cable. This is the only way to download if the internal memory used for recording images. My Windows XP operating system readily detects the new USB device, although one needs to wait just a small amount of time for the connection to be completed. The other and even simpler method is to use an SD memory card and inexpensive SD card reader. I far prefer the latter method, and rotate two SD cards, collecting the used card at the end of the day and inserting the off-day blank. Then I can leave the camera in place, a matter of importance if I had to do some careful positioning (and I can keep a guano-splattered BirdCam out of the house!) and everything is set for the next day while I review images at my convenience. I’m currently using 2 GB cards but the camera will accept up to a 4 GB. I’ll swap in a 4 GB card if I plan to be away for a few days and that way I lessen the risk of losing pictures due to a full SD card. Either method of transferring data is quite satisfactory and I have never had problems with either. Use the method that suits best, and happy photography!
