Stomachs With Wings

Consumption of foodstuffs has declined among many species these past two weeks, especially among the suet eaters (Catbirds, Bluebirds, Woodpeckers.) Some of this can be attributed to more widely available natural foods such as insects, and some of this trend comes with the expulsion of youngsters who have grown old enough to maintain their own territories. But among the House Finches, it is an entirely different story thus far. My House Finch group has if anything expanded. Today I counted 12 birds working the feeders, and working them hard. In fact my tube feeders are emptying at their fastest rate since springtime. Just watching Finches in action persuades me that they are stomachs with wings. My heavens! Well, we love the Finches but they are relatively expensive diners here.

We have plenty of those brothers in our yard too. I don't mind though - they are pretty!
