Conflict In Birdland

It's a tough time for the birds even at feeder stations at extensive as mine. Birds are understandably sensitive to protecting their stake in food resources and are easily stressed by the very presence of competition. And some birds are more uncomfortable with the presence of others. A classic example is the relatively gregarious House Finch versus the relatively standoffish Northern Cardinal. At the extreme end are the hyper-territorial Ruby Throated Hummingbirds who will give even me a hard time if I get too close to a favorite feeder. This photo suggested an interesting encounter that took place when I was away. The Carolina Chickadees spend a fair amount of time at the southeast nectar dish which they use as a drinking station, so they certainly annoyed this Hummer. I can only imagine who blinked first! I'll bet that it wasn't the smaller bird!
