The cast of characters at the feeding station is always changing. Sometimes dramatically, as when the seasons break and entire runs of species move in or out. But sometimes it is a subtle change day to day. Over the summer I have seen periods of absence for a number of birds. A new absence I have become aware of is the American Robins. They have not been visiting the suet feeder for some time. Of course, there are insects and other invertebrates aplenty in the late summer and the Robins are likely to be doing very well on their own. But I can't help wondering if a recent suet cake change is to blame. Perhaps they don't like the softer texture. Who knows? I'm sure they'll be back. And I'm just as certain the mix of regulars will be slowly shifting as we inch ever closer to the next big migration.
