Even during the early autumn feeder doldrums, we continue to do very well with Northern Cardinals. We have a good sized family group (I have counted at least four birds) which visits every day and is interested in safflower seed, sunflower seed, and suet nuggets. Despite what I have read and heard, these Cardinals show up quite often throughout the day, although they are reliably the last birds on hand in the evening twilight. What are my secrets? The real key, I think, is habitat. We have a lush natural section with copious vine and brush pile cover. The feeders are also not too far from the treeline, and so the Cardinals are more comfortable spending time there. And there's plenty of clean water. The success of this strategy was evident in 2009, as the birds are regulars and they had excellent nesting success. I'm all set for a Cardinal-rich winter!
