For most of 2009 I had not observed very much American Goldfinch traffic here. I heard these birds singing and calling in the neighborhood, but they stayed away from my feeders for whatever reasons. In late summer I was regularly seeing one or two Goldfinches (a pair), and now I am seeing even more. My belief is that I have a family group. This would make sense: the finches are late nesters and juveniles are easily confused with females. This family group is visiting daily and making good use of our sunflower seed feeders. I'm pleased that they evidently had a successful nesting season and with any luck this group is now attached to the good eating opportunities at Cary BirdCam. I'm sure that I will be seeing more of them in the fall and winter.
