They're On Their Own Schedule

I am a big fan of nuthatches. We have three species in this part of the southeast and they each have their own peculiar patterns of visitation. The best known is this one: the White Breasted Nuthatch. I see them year-round, but not frequently. They tend to come around for a few days and then I may not see them again for a few weeks. And this is true in any season. Lately I have seen them (or at least, one of them) at the sunflower seed feeders. In typical nuthatch style it is grab-and-run with them although the White Breasteds don't work nearly as fast as the Brown Headeds who more closely ape the Chickadees and Titmice. Interestingly, I don't often see the White Breasteds in their iconic "upside down" posture. For whatever reasons, they are perfectly content to work the sunflower seed tubes heads-up. What interesting birds!
