For three days my tube feeders, and for that matter all of the feeders at the main station have been quiet. I have not filled a single one since Thursday. I had the opportunity to watch things closely today and observed no feeder activity at all between 8 AM and 6 PM. My usually reliable finches are nowhere to be seen. Cardinals are AWOL. The wrens were absent. Only at the suet basket did I see anything at all on BirdCam. What could be going on? The obvious thought is that predators have cleared the area. To be sure I have seen hawks in the neighborhood, although not recently. And I did chase a cat away from the other feeder station near dusk. I may have missed the pivotal moment on Thursday. Well, I suspect that given time my regulars will return. I am a known and dependable food source. But it is going to be awfully lonely here until the birds return.Saturday, November 7, 2009
An Eerie Quiet
