A Wildlife Hotel

One of the more satisfying "win-wins" for me is the annual autumn brush-and-leaf clearing. I win by moving this stuff off the lawn, and the wildlife wins because I move the debris into brush piles that ought to be a great winter hangout. This brush pile is oriented so that there is a wall of material along the west (blunting the prevailing west winds) and has substantial hiding places. Throwing a layer of leaves over the top provides a little more insulation. Most of my neighbors bag and toss their lawn debris, which is really too bad. They'd profit from the eventual compost and also the chance to give critters a warm, safe place to go. But at Cary BirdCam, the hotel is open!
